Quelques notes sur Ouagadougou / A few notes on Ouagadougou

Alors, la ville de Ouaga. La première chose à dire est qu’il fait CHAUD CHAUD CHAUD ! Pendant la journée à l’intérieur, la température atteint 39° ! Le soir c’est pareil. Et oui, ça veut dire qu’il fait encore plus chaud dehors (42°)! J'ai été bénie par la clim et un ventilateur pour l'instant, mais ce luxe va disparaître quand je pars pour le sud !

La ville de Ouaga est remplie de poussière et de pollution : J’ai du mal à respirer parfois avec toutes les fumées. Le mélange de la chaleur, la poussière et la pollution font que je suis contente de travailler à l'intérieur ! Tout le monde roule dans de vieilles bagnoles, des motos ou bien en vélos. Et la conduite ici est « libre », sans règles. C’est assez comique à voir ! Ca me rappelle Paris : on entend souvent les voitures klaxonner !

Peut-être pensez-vous que je me sens seule ? C’est vrai que j’avais cette peur mais je peux vous assurer que je suis constamment accompagnée ! Pendant la journée les moustiques viennent me visiter de temps en temps : je me douche avec des termites et des fourmis et pendant la nuit des créatures qui ressemblent à des lézards font tout leur possible pour que je ne m’ennuie pas ! En fait, ils sont si gentils qu’ils arrivent à me faire dormir avec leurs bruits bizarres.

Mais pour bien commencer la journée, nous préparons du jus pressé frais tous les matins. C’est mon plaisir de la journée ! Armés de vitamines, la journée de travail commence…

I really should mention something about the living conditions here. Number one: It’s HOT HOT HOT!! It’s approximately 39° during the day INSIDE! Yes, that means that outside it’s about 42°, and apparently it’s going to get hotter in April. I have been blessed with air conditioning but when I leave to go to the South, this luxury will disappear for about 6 weeks.

Another thing is the dust and pollution: I find it quite hard to breathe sometimes in the city as there are a lot of fumes and when mixed with the dusty roads, winding down the window in the car is oxygen suicide! The sun is hot, but you can’t always see it with the dust. This is the capital so we really should expect this. In the countryside the air is clean.

You may think that I am lonely here, but I assure you I have been constantly in the company of others! During the day, the mosquitoes come and visit often; when I have a shower the termites and ants come to say hi; and all night long lizard-like amphibians called marguyas make sure I’m kept entertained. In fact, they do me the courtesy of putting me to sleep with their strange noises. And, in the morning there is a bird which sings with 5 notes, the first one a little longer than the rest. This bird sings the same thing over and over again.

Each morning I really look forward to getting up because we have fresh fruit juice. Yes, freshly squeezed! As thirst is a 24-hour-a-day thing here, it feels so good to drink something fresh and nutritious.
