Serpents ! / Snakes!

Les étudiants m’ont dit qu’il y avait des serpents autour du campus, mais comme je n’en avais pas encore vu, je me suis dit qu’ils devaient être rares. Mais, le jeudi soir, tandis que nous étions tous dehors en train de discuter, nous avons entendu un froissement fort. Comme il y a beaucoup de grenouilles ici (et lorsque je dis beaucoup, c’est BEAUCOUP !), nous pensions que c’étaient les grenouilles qui bougeaient. Cependant, les grenouilles bougent uniquement lorsque quelqu’un passe avec une lampe de poche, alors l’un des étudiants est allé voir et justement, c’était un énorme serpent ! Ils pensent que c’était un cobra. Il était littéralement à 5 mètres de là où nous étions assis.

Les stagiaires ont pris un grand couteau pour essayer de le tuer, mais le serpent s’est échappé (s’ils l’avaient attrapé, ils voulaient en manger !).

Ce que j’ai trouvé le plus étonnant par rapport à cette expérience c’est comment les stagiaires ont réagi ensuite. Ils dorment toujours dehors parce qu’il fait tellement chaud ici, mais généralement ils prennent leur sommier et matelas et tout, alors ils ne sont pas carrément par terre. Mais, l’un des stagiaires a pris son matelas et l’a mis directement par terre—tout de suite après le passage du serpent ! Et encore plus incroyable, l’un des autres jeunes hommes a été faire ses besoins dans les arbustes, là où avait été le serpent, sans lampe de poche, sans couteau, sans rien. Je ne pouvais pas vraiment comprendre pourquoi ils se mettaient dans des situations aussi précaires, mais eux ils trouvaient marrant que j’étais aussi inquiète par rapport à tout cela. Espérons tout simplement que je ne rencontre pas moi-même l’un de ces serpents !

The interns mentioned a few times that there were snakes around the campus, but as I hadn’t seen one, I thought they were pretty scarce. However, on Thursday evening, while we were sitting outside chatting, we heard a loud rustling sound. As there are lots of frogs around here (and when I say a lot, I mean A LOT!), we initially thought it was the frogs moving. However, the frogs only move when someone passes with a torch, so one of the interns went to investigate and right enough, it was a huge snake! They think it was a cobra. It was literally about 5 metres away from where we were all sitting. The interns took a big knife and went to try and kill it, but it escaped (they were planning on eating it if they caught it!).

What I found amusing about this experience was what happened after. The interns sleep outside because it’s soo hot here at night, but they take the bed frame and everything so they’re not actually on the ground. But, one of the interns just took his mattress and slept on the ground right after the passing of the snake! And to top off the courage of these guys, one guy, about 30 minutes later, went to urinate in the bushes, right where the snake passed, with no torch, no light, nothing. I couldn’t really understand why they would put themselves in such a precarious situation but anyway, they found it funny that I was so edgy about this! Let’s hope I don’t actually see one of these snakes!
